"Over the hill - not far away.  The geology and archaeology of the High Wolds"

The last of our Winter/Spring talks was held at Hook Memorial Hall last night, 13th March 2025.

Huge thanks to Alison Spencer from the Wolds Archaeology Group for a great talk on the landscape and archaeological activities and findings of FFWAP (Fridaythorpe Fimber Wetwang Archaeology Project), of which Alison is the Chair.

Alison's first excavation project was as a community volunteer at Hanging Grimston in 2015.  Since then she has participated in several projects in the East Riding and is fortunate enough to be involved in the large magnetometry surveying project within the Parishes of Fridaythorpe, Fimber and Wetwang.

What a great finale to this season's programme of talks!

Now it's almost time to get digging!!!!

Outcomes of Using Drones to Detect Local Archaeology

On 13th February we were treated to a fascinating talk by Tony Hunt from Yorkshire Archaeology Aerial Mapping, on his very innovative aerial mapping technique in which he utilises the latest drones and flying cameras to photograph, map and analyse archaeological and historical sites across the North of England.

Tony is the Ex-Chair of The Council for British Archaeology in Yorkshire, and runs YAA Mapping, a pro-bono aerial survey resource for community archaeological groups. He has developed several innovative imaging systems to spot, survey and record archaeological sites from all around the north of England, including vanished abbeys, ruined castles, burial mounds and even henges.

Tony is also the founder of the Thornborough Archaeology Group and currently Vice Chair of the Yorkshire Archaeological and Historical Society Prehistory section. More information on Thornborough may be found on the Thornborough Archaeology Group Facebook page and at https://thornboroughag.org/

Tony is also writing a book assembling many of the facebook, social media and investigative journeys he has made around the area over the last 10 years.

Thank you to Tony and to everyone who attended this brilliant talk.

The Templar Preceptory Site at Faxfleet

Our first talk of 2025 was held on 9th January in our new venue of Hook Memorial Hall.  We had a very good turn-out for Dr Helen Fenwick's excellent talk about the history and archaeology of the Templar Preceptory Site at Faxfleet.  Dr Fenwick is Associate Dean for Education and Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at Hull University.

The Faxfleet Preceptory is a former community of the Knights Templar.  At its height, Faxfleet was one of the most important preceptories in Yorkshire, but was suppressed around 1312.  Information about Dr Fenwick's Faxfleet Templar Preceptory Project may be found here

Our Annual General Meeting was held after the talk.  Thank you to everyone who attended.
