Knedlington Hall
On 17th October 2021 the Society had the honour of a guided tour around Knedlington Hall courtesy of Society member Phil Thomas.
Knedlington Hall has a history going back at least 700 years with the current house dating from the 16th/17th century. Phil gave us a wonderful tour outlining the restoration work completed to date and the next steps in the project. The research work Phil has carried out on the hall is second to none and has gone a long way to prove that this is a very important building in the architectural history of the East Riding. Michael ensured the tour was topped off in style with tea, coffee and cake! A great day was had by all and a big thank you must go to Phil and Michael for their generous hospitality.
We were delighted to follow this at the beginning of 2022 with a short excavation in the grounds of the Hall.
An interesting find on day 2 of our dig ... It looks like we managed to drop trench 2 right on top of an old capped well!
Then we uncovered a lovely piece of slipware next to the well!
A few weeks later we were very fortunate to be invited back to Knedlington Hall for a pot washing session of the finds from the test pits. This was followed by a wonderful barbecue hosted by Phil and Michael, rounded off by a fascinating talk from the inestimable Peter Halkon.
