From the Iron Age to the Romans

On Thursday, 15th December 2022 we were treated to an excellent talk by Community Archaeologist, Dr Jon Kenny.  The talk was entitled, "From the Iron Age to the Romans in the Southern Vale of York".

The original project, which ran from 2017 to 2019, set out to investigate the Iron Age people who lived in the Vale of York south of the spot where the Romans later created the settlement known today as York. The area is bounded by the rivers Ouse (west and south) and Derwent (east) with the ice age moraine, and the York moraine, to the north. The project undertook fieldwork in a part of Yorkshire that had been previously little investigated archaeologically.

Further information on the project, including a free download of the full report, may be found here:  https://www.jkcomarc.co.uk/copy-of-cawood-common-2019

HAS Open Day

Our Open Day of 2022 was held at the Shire Hall, Howden on 26th November. This turned out to be a great day, with lots of visitors and a wonderful double talk by Gary outlining the growth of the society.

Historic Howden ~ Guided Walk

On 26th May 2022, we enjoyed a very interesting guided walk around Historic Howden, excellently led by our Chair, Stephen Lonsdale. There was a very good turn out including quite a few non-members. We hope to hold more guided walks during 2023!
